Reality Check India

SEZ Blog

Found a new blog focused on the new SEZ policy called the Reliance SEZ Blog.

Check it out :

Somethings for us bloggers to take up.

  • Collect details of SEZs in China and Middle East (especially Jebel Ali in Dubai)
  • Scan the SEZ appovals granted so far.  See Interesting to see that Wipro can got an approval for a 6 hectare (thats right 6 hectare SEZ) in Hyderabad and two SEZs of 5 hectare and 6 hectare each in Sarjapur Bangalore. Hexaware (Software) and Syntel (Software) have approval for two 11 acre SEZs in Chennai. Note these are SEZs not mere units within an SEZ. You cant blame them because they will take advantage of any policy to maximise their profits. The government must not allow such tiny SEZs to come up. It will spell disaster for existing infrastructure around these SEZs.

While the entire nation is focused on divisive policies such as unmonitored quotas based on caste / religion / or gender. We cant allow such a land scam to go unnoticed.

Are employees in SEZ units eligible for IT exemption?

Or does the exemption apply only to share holders in the SEZ unit?

The Wipro SEZ is located at Guchibowli. The area is dotted with several other Software Developemnt Centers like Microsoft, Infosys, CA , Kanbay etc. All of them have land ranging from 2 to 10 Hectares. Polaris is next door to Wipro. Could all others also have been SEZs? How come only Wipro could get SEZ in this location? Is it not an unfair advantage?

    Sorry I missed your comment.

The employees do not get any IT exemption under any Indian law. The units in the SEZ get exemption from various direct (Income Tax) and indirect (Excise and Customs).

The whole policy is flawed. Do not look for any logic. Most IT companies are hoping the SEZs can help them with tax holiday. I think the minimum size of an SEZ must be 10000 hectares (approx 10sq km) and located in a coastal area (in AP perhaps Vizag).

“The employees do not get any IT exemption under any Indian law.”

Those who are willing to MOVE will get IT exemption if they will look for it. Companies get IT exemption because there are willing to move to places where IT exemptions are granted. If employees want IT exemption you can MOVE to a tax haven like cayman islands and be an NRI.

I abhor the SEZ policy and consider it to be one of the scams of the millennium, you really do not want me at Hyatt Regency.

the minimum area required for an IT/ITES SEZ is 10 Ha.
anybody can get the permission if they fulfil this basic critiria.only the companies working out of SEZ and or the promoters of SEZ are eligible for IT exemptions-not the employees
