Reality Check India

Wahrheit macht frei

Posted in Uncategorized by realitycheck on August 29, 2007

Tension is brewing once again in the elite AIIMS medical college. See here for more details.

The health minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss today claimed :

However, he was quick to state that: “It is unfortunate that AIIMS has become a manufacturing unit for producing doctors for the US and the UK.”

It is even more unfortunate that the lack of data in India’s social justice programs have created caste based interests that allow such brazeness to have little or no effect.

Blog title translation : The truth shall set us free. A variation of the Nazi era slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei” (Work shall set you free)

I have myself been treated at the AIIMS for a complicated throat problem that needed high skilled doctors and I must say that the doctors there are trying to do the maximum against all odds such as slack administration, corruption at all levels and the extremely large number of patients they have to attend to. Most of these patients come to AIIMS in a very critical condition having been abandoned by the doctors in the rest of the country. It is unfortunate that the minister has nothing to say about health care in the rest of thec country and concentrates his energy on hounding an elite institution where research goes hand in hand with treatment. He should rather encourage more such institutions in the rest of the country so that people dont have to travel thousands of kilometers for treatment.

Regardless of where one stands on reservations, the actions of Dr.Ramadoss in delaying the degree certificates needs to be condemned.

I’m not very fond of the AIIMS crowd, not very comfortable with the idea of going on strike while ignoring sick and dying patients, appalled at the street sweeping (apni aukaat mein rahiyo?) protests, and disturbed at reports of casteist bias and abuse there. Also 33% institute quota if present needs to be explained and justified at least to some degree by those who automatically oppose other quotas.

But that is nothing to do with the fact that these doctors have completed their study programmes satisfactorily. What is coming across here is an arrogant almost despotic tendency of this man to use and abuse whatever powers he has to teach opponents a lesson. One shudders to think of the state of affairs had we had a more pliant judiciary.

I hope Dr.Bruno can join us! Imagine how it would be if some anti-quota chancellor dragged your degree along Bruno, because he didnt like your political views.

    Dear Jai,

Try and get selected to AIIMS in the first place. Do you know how hard that is? These are really meritorious students! In other countries, they would be treated like kings!
Here we are trying to break their spirit by delaying their degrees.

Let us expect that he will do justice to atleast the OBC students there, for whom he is all for.
