Reality Check India

Tamil blood politics

Posted in Uncategorized by realitycheck on November 6, 2007

There is a storm brewing in a sambhar cup,

LTTE third in command Brig Tamilchelvan was killed four days back by the SLAF.  Many are saddened ( I must admit I was too). Before him, the world had never seen a smiling face, only scowls in the banned terrorist organization. This is quite a big deal for those who hoped to build communication channels into the outfit. Compared to the others like Pirabharan, Pottu Amman, and even his mentor Anton Balasingham – Tamilchelvan seemed to be someone who had his emotions under control and was ready to explore alternatives.

Shortly afterwards, the TN CM Karunanidhi pens a poem for him.  Jaya and the local TN Congress are up in arms. Not suprisingly, Sonia and the national Congress agreed to look the other side.

The issue then took a predictable turn from there. Karunanidhi went on to add :

“The person who was killed in Sri Lanka was a Tamil. And the blood that runs in me is Tamil too. So, I extended my condolence,” he added.

This is an obvious hit at Jaya because he was responding to her. She then hastened to defend her Tamilness; obviously called into question because of her caste + place of birth. This is the centrepiece (Aaniver in Tamil)  of domestic TN politics.

“I know what he meant when he made that remark. He has apparently referred to my birth in Mysore. Though I was born in Mysore, I was born in a Tamil family and Tamil blood is flowing in my veins.”

“My mother tongue is Tamil. When we accept those born in Sri Lanka as Tamils, we should also accept those born in Mysore, which is a part of India, as Tamils,” she said in a statement here.

Questioning domicile of  groups is a dangerous road to travel down. Even if we indulge the supporters of theories like ‘Aryan Invasion’ – we still have to answer many questions. For starters : How do we know which castes were Aryan and which were not ? This is not as cut and dry as Bumiputeras in Malaysia or White settlers in Australia.

About the LTTE itself

In the long past, I used to engage in endless debates with my Canada/US based SL friends on this issue. I will keep this one short.

The limitations of Tamil blood support must be clear to all.

Despite all the theatrics, the dravidian parties will not send any fighters.  This is a reality that the LTTE must never lose sight of.  Just to drive this point home, if Mohammed Hafeez of the Lashkar-e-Toiba conducts a recruitment drive in Pakistan for deployment in Kashmir, hundreds will sign up.  If the DMK were to organize a camp (as unlikely as it may be) – no one will show up.  This is where it stops.

In fact, the current Indian government (propped up by the DMK/PMK)  is sending all kinds of weapons including navy vessels to the SLA which are effectively neutralizing the critical eastern shore of the island.

How then does the LTTE manage to still hold on ? They even have an “airforce”.  This lack of external patronage and spatial isolation is what makes the LTTE many times more potent than any Jihadi outfit. All insurgents in India (ULFA, Kashmir, Maoists) have international patrons and overland supply lines. In contrast, the LTTE operates in a small island supplied via boats. Even SL army commanders and Indian security experts like B.Raman have expressed admiration for the fighting capabilities of the LTTE (especially the now estranged Karuna). This is also their undoing, because they do not balance their military strategy with political realism. The Sri Lankans will keep pushing them closer to the edge, not necessarily because they are braver – but because they have the resources available to a state actor.

The “Tamil blood” lyrics you hear now from TN is not an expression of support to the LTTE.  Sending reinforcements or preventing military transfers to the SLA would be an expression of support. It is just the same old caste based sloganeering. It might have had some relevance in the 50’s – but not today when the state assembly has only 2 brahmins out of 236 (including Jaya and comedian SVe Shekar).

Poems never hurt anyone. So let us not make a big deal out of this one.

Maoists have got some “international patrons and overland supply lines.” Either you have got some fantastic imagination, or you know something that I don’t. And considering that I have been studying and following the maoist movement for quiet sometime now, that’s not good news for me.

Anoop, I am surprised ! Do you deny the connection between the PWG, the CPI-Maoist and the maoists in Nepal ?

Many analysts believe that Nepal is the overland supply route for arms transfer between Pakistan and Bangladesh / NE. Given the Maoist clout in Nepal, it is hard to believe that the Indian Maoists do not have a tap into this supply. I could cite various sources – but you probably already follow blogs like Naxal watch and know about them. There are even some who say that in some recent attacks in Chattisgarh, Maoists from Nepal were also participants. I do not know if these reports are true.

I certainly do not know about them as much as you do. I do not want to pretend like I do. So, why don’t you throw some light on the nature of the ‘brotherhood’ between Maoists in the two countries ?

There are tons of srilankan tamils living in Europe and I can say confidently that indian tamils have not much in common with them. On the other hand, indian tamils of different castes have no problems identifying a common ground for conversation or interest. I identify much more with india than with being tamil. The tamil that srilankans speak is really difficult to understand and their food is far too hot for me. They are the same to me as tamils from Fiji or Mauritious. .

I totally agree with Revathi.. Im from madurai and as part of my work and travels I have interacted with a few tamils from Sri Lanka. Other than somewhat understandable Sri Lankan Tamil language I do not have much to identify and have conversations with them, unlike People from other parts of India with whom there are lot of commonalities. Yeah one thing. I do really like Sri Lankan food though..

The “Tamil blood” lyrics you hear now from TN is not an expression of support to the LTTE. – 1. why is your dear mysore jayalalitha demanding dismissal of government –

rss which killed gandhi is not banned. sikhs are not hated now because of indira gandhi’s murder. but why hate all tamilians

    3. why is this activity of singala government not condemned by n.ram or cho ramasamy

While I am not a patroniser of LTTE, i do believe that India (read brahmin media (Ram, Cho), brahmin politicians (mani shankar AIYAR), brahmin bureaucracy (read Narayanan) is totally supporting Singala government against the interest of Tamilians

    4. WHy is government of india not taking action against singala military shooting tamil fishermen. So far 800 fisherman have been killed by singala navy.

    Anon,

    >> While I am not a patroniser of LTTE, i do believe that India (read brahmin media (Ram, Cho), brahmin politicians (mani shankar AIYAR), brahmin bureaucracy (read Narayanan) is totally supporting Singala government against the interest of Tamilians >>

Even if this were true, does it matter ?

These guys are powerless entities. 232 out of 234 MLAs in the state and 39 out of 40 in the centre is great isnt it ?

Let me turn around and ask you. Why does the LTTE hate the brahmins ? By repeating the anti-brahmin rhetoric of the Dravidian movement, they have made enemies. There is absolutely no stake for them in the dravidian movement in TN. As I pointed out, unlike the cross border support in Kashmir, will anyone from the Dravidian parties actually join the fight ?

    >> WHy is government of india not taking action against singala military shooting tamil fishermen. So far 800 fisherman have been killed by singala navy. >>

Who should answer this question ?

  10. Anon said, on November 21, 2007 at 8:12 am

Why does the LTTE hate the brahmins ? Who said this.

Any way the point is why brahmins hate tamilians.

Who should answer this question ? All those anti tamilians. all those narayanans and advanis who hate tamilians only for the reason that they got rid of brahmin dominance in this state. the rss and vhp are afraid of tamilians who proved that brahmins are not superior in intellect.

ltte is a seperate organisation. but why is government of india (read narayanan and other brahmin) so vehement against tamilians

Umm. Sarath Kumar, Vijayakanth are not Brahmanas, nor are Advani, Rajnath Singh, Uma Bharati or others. They are also against the LTTE. I find this rather peculiar “Brahmins are not superior” refrain unique to some of these Dravidian supremacists. It smacks of a very deep-seated inferiority complex which leads to the need for this constant assertion everywhere. It is honestly puzzling. There is a feverish search for any Brahmin sounding name in each and every sphere of life, media, politics, education, This obsession is very unhealthy. Because of this extreme complex, the rest of Indians (Brahmins going by this Anon’s definition) are going to dismiss these people as a sad bunch of jokers.

The Sinhala people are doing to the Tamils exactly what these Dravidian race supremacists are trying to do to the Brahmanas. Sinhalas claim, that Sri Lankan Tamils are not part of Sri Lankan society, and they need to be pushed out of Sri Lanka and all of Sri Lanka should be free of Tamils. Sri Lankan Media, cinema, intellectual circles, educational institutions, political circles etc should be cleansed of even the faintest bit of Tamils. Wonder if that sounds familiar to this Anon.

Take it easy, enjoy life, travel and broaden your mind and just learn to work hard and stop worrying about “proving” yourself. Be a Samathu payyan, and not an asattu payyan.

Hey Anon, I have a doubt. I read that the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University is one “Ramachandran”. Can you please do some research and find out if he is a Brahman? Thanks! Also, can you please do some research if all those North Indian heroines (sorry Brahmins!) acting in Tamil movies are really Brahmanas in disguise? Could there be some conspiracy here? Maybe there is a sinister Brahmana agenda here, and we trust you will unearth the full details! Alright, this should keep you busy for a few months. Nalla Payyan thane nee? Po aaraichi pannu. Thanks!

  13. Observer said, on November 22, 2007 at 10:33 am

On a more serious note, I think one reason Brahmanas are not obsessed about the Sri Lanka problem is that more of them, maybe I am generalizing, identify with India as a whole, rather than taking a purely chauvinistic approach. Systematic elimination of Brahmanas from the Tamil political arena has also led to many TamBrams less interested in such issues. Most have been shunted to the private sector, many have migrated outside TN also, where there is no political backing to organize in Bandhs, processions, and other activities. So inspite of the anguish that Dravidian supremacists like this Anon pour out, it is really upto them to figure out how to bring back Tambrams onto their side. More venting like the above is definitely going to push Tambrams further away from these supremacists.

Unlike 50 years ago, very few of the neighboring states, Kerala, karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra etc would join TN’s call for a Dravida nadu, because they have seen the strident and narrow minded approach of these Dravidian supremacists. Given that TN will only constitute 3.5% of India’s population in the near future, these Dravidian supremacists risk alienating themselves further with their narrow linguistic chauvinism, unless they learn to think at a pan-India level. India, being a democracy, runs on numbers, and this is something that these Anons should keep in mind, lest the rest of India mete out the same treatment to them as they are to their Tambrams!

One major point you’ve overlooked in your views of LTTE.

The main point is – LTTE receives lot of christian funding. From the churches of Europe, Canada and Australia.

Hope that explains the sustaining power of LTTE, Dravidian politicians to affinity to LTTE, International major influencers not severely condemning LTTE, anti brahmin and anti-muslim stance of LTTE.

Don’t be under the impression that LTTE lack any external patronage. Far from it.

The Real Reason For Anti Brahmin Feelings in TN

In case you don’t know, father of Dravidian Movement was Reverend Robert Caldwell, who was bishop of Tirunelveli 1880s.

Since then, dravidian movement, invigorated by the Aryan Invasion Theory, has always received good financial support from christist organisations..In fact, all the dravidian politicians were beneficiaries of largesse from them. (Once a famous american journalist even said that CIA used to pay to Annadurai, founder of DMK. The remark got died out in the in the then prevailing atmosphere of intolerance of dravidian politics.)

For the early christian missionaries to TN, the objective was only this; convert the brahmins and then everyone will follow suit. The entire state could be converted to christianity.

Unfortunately, brahmins refused to convert and the job of the missionaries became harder. And much to their dismay, the state still has not achived the progress of conversion the neighbouring state of Kerala has done. (In Kerala, lot of brahmins got converted to Syrian Christianity.)

No wonder the Christian organisations and all their affiliates hate TN brahmins !!

ls. Sri Lankan Media, cinema, intellectual circles, educational institutions, political circles etc should be cleansed of even the faintest bit of Tamils… youonly use the word cleaning. that shows that you are like hitler, modi and rajapakse. thanks for letting know your feeling
and then dravidians do not kill brahmins like how singalese kill tamilians and modiwallahs kill muslims – even pregnant woman and burn the child that is aryan rowdys doing
brahmin were not killed in tamilnadu. when other castes got education, the brahmins could not compete with the educated people of other caste. that’s all. where as modi, hitler and rajapakse involve in ethnic cleaning(word used by you) and this is called holocaust and genocide

reality, do you understand that genocide (in gujarat) is the word used rss vhp. don’t just blame the media

about north indian heroines, no idea. but most of the all the technicians in tamil cinema are not brahmins today. but 50 years back they were all brahmins. that is how tamil nadu is prospering

Given that TN will only constitute 3.5% of India’s population in the near future, 6/100 is 6 percent.

Umm. Sarath Kumar, Vijayakanth are not Brahmanas, nor are Advani, Rajnath Singh, Uma Bharati or others. They are also against the LTTE. this is an example of the false propaganda against tamils by vested interest. vijayakanths son’s name is prabhakaran and it is open secret why he gave that name. refer to the old newspaper and other magazine. this is a proof that you don’t have truth on your side. anyway, you have indeed accepted that brahmins are against LTTE. regarding which reality was doubtful. thanks for helping me prove the point. also you had accepted that what is going on in srilanka is the cleaning (like gujarat and germany) and thanks for pointing this to reality who was worried about modi being called as the 21st century hitler and holocaust man.

    dear rc,

who are these people trying to bring in caste elements into india’s foreign policy? i thought this was the only sphere where these problems didnt appear. If the LTTE is so enamoured by TN and its politics, why dont they ask for union with TN instead of a separate state? This would have made things easier for them.

  19. Observer said, on November 26, 2007 at 9:30 am

Anon seems incoherent. Looks like the Sri Lankans have done a number on him. Good luck for the future. Even your own LTTE has accepted they should not have assassinated Rajiv Gandhi. They declared war on India. If you are attempting to unite the “Tamils” through this “anti-Brahman” tirade, you might be disappointed when you find out that a majority of Tamilians (alright alright Dravidians) are not likely to volunteer to come fight in Eelam. Check out Sarath Kumar’s views on LTTE on http://www.indiainteracts.com. And please do not assassinate him.

Sri Lankan Tamils should resolve their issues with Sri Lanka peacefully, because a history forged in blood is not going to be forgotten. One never knows what the future brings.

  20. Observer said, on November 26, 2007 at 9:51 am

Given that TN will only constitute 3.5% of India’s population in the near future, 6/100 is 6 percent.

Anon might want to work on his comprehension skills and read sentences completely. I know unless the word “Brahmin” is present in a sentence you may not pay attention, but you might want to try. Today, India’s population is 1.15 billion, and TN’s is 62 million. It is projected to stay roughly the same over the next 40 years, while India’s population, primarily due to North India, is projected to increase to about 1.8 billion. You can check these figures on http://www.censusindia.gov.in instead of reading LTTE news all the time. So in one generation, TN will constitute only about 3-3.5% of the population. If you know India, you should know that numbers and numbers alone matter. The Dravidian supremacists time is going to be up shortly as the rest of India is not going to buy this Aryan/Dravidian crap. If you fervently believe in that myth, you should also be very very grateful than the “Aryans” did not treat you “Dravidians” like the Aborigines of Australia, the Native Americans of America etc and make you extinct.

Also, if you really do believe in such things, then you guys should vacate Sri Lanka since it is not your land and go somewhere else.

    Plight of Tamils in Malaysia

The dravidians heart beats for the tamils in Sri Lanka but what about the tamils in Malaysia?

No, they dont give a damn to them. Precisely, because, group involved in Hindus, and the christists backed dravidian parties have no stake in agitating for them. You see, you won’t get christist and NGO funds for taking up hindu causes.

Anon, please wake up. The dravidian support of Tamils in Sri Lanka has nothing to do with tamil fraternity. Dravidian parties are funded by christian organisations and they, in turn, support LTTE, another favorite organisation of christians. That’s why you won’t find a single dravidian leader coming up in support of Malaysian Tamils.

  22. seeker said, on November 27, 2007 at 7:37 am

as a rejoinder to one of the earlier points of anon…

TN, of course, is prospering …you know why?

Because,…almost all the brahmins have now become entrepreneurs….

  23. Observer said, on November 30, 2007 at 6:03 am

Given the recent furor over Karunanishi’s concerns over Tamils in Malaysia being subject to Govt sponsored discrimination, it is somewhat ironic to hear Malaysia’s minister say that karunanidhi should mind his own state’s problems. Indeed, being a strong proponent of reservations in favor of the “sons of the soil” in TN itself, why are he and Ramadoss so concerned about the exact same thing being practiced by the Malaysian Govt against the Tamils there?

Hey Anon, can you please check if the Malaysian Govt is dominated by Brahmins? I have a suspicion, like you, that maybe Malaysian Muslims are actually Brahmins in disguise! Please give us the latest info!

  24. shocking news it was to hear from the closer sources? Really, this is turning to be the worst amongst all of affairs. Prabhu Deva, father of three children (Recently one passed away) is in love with Nayanthara, the leading actress. That sounds quite absurd but you’ve got to believe. Although it was earlier considered to be rumors, certain channels of outside Tamil Nadu have confirmed it. And of course, tomorrow morning you’ll find this one on the headlines of all newspapers.

Sources have again revealed that concern has been shown from both of the sides and soon divorce will be done between bonded relationships.

Now Prabhu Deva has fled to unknown place stating that he has some works on Hindi project. Meanwhile Nayan too is missing in town and seems to have gone for abroad. This has evoked yet more on this issue.
